Swathes of Snow

This winter, I was walking along the path inside the Arboretum’s stone wall by route 203. Then, cutting across the grass, I headed for the area with three small ponds. After previous inches of snow had mostly melted, there had been light snow overnight. Now, on the grass, the new fallen snow had melted, except where previous snow remained. The old snow was given a fresh soft topping with the new white surface. There were only spots, patches, and swathes of the new white upon the dull winter grass – scattered in a pattern that could not be designed; an utter naturalness and purity, spontaneously arrayed. The pure fresh figures were spread throughout, effortlessly composed for every opportunity.
